Opening of "Troy"

Odysseus: [voiceover] Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone, and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?" These are powerful first lines. The opening lines, opening scenes, in movies really set the tone for the movie. What reactions do you have to these lines, knowing the epic characteristics and the text of The Iliad as you do?

i like that troy was opened that way. those lines really showcase an epic's characteristics, one way for example is parents telling their kids those stories to make the children want to grow up like the heroes.

I think that most of the warriors in The Iliad were loved their country, and thats why they fought for their country. They had to be brave to fight in all the battles and make that life-risking decision to run and kill your opponent or run the opposite direction like a coward. I also believe that most of the warriors wanted to be remembered as a great or courageous warrior. Most of the people who fought probably wanted to do something out of the blue so they would be remembered forever.

I agree with Kendall. I really liked the opening words, also. Some men go into battle hoping they'll do something significant. Some men go into battle just hoping to come out with a victory and pride for their country.
Some men go into battle hoping to recieve both. Everybody would like to be remembered for their bravery. I think these words actually show and explain that. Achilles, obviously, was remembered for his strength and power. I mean, he even has a body part named after him. The Achilles Tenden. Sterling told me about that Friday. Never thought about it until then, hahah.

I agree with all the comments that were left depending on what point of view you look at these lines. Well these lines can mean alot of things. And to me this comment means that what you do isn't always heard until later on in life when someone comes accross a great work or even a new invention. And will you be "found" meaning will you be heard for a great discovery you found or a story you wrote then or just all your ideas be buried. Or maybe we think are "works" wasn't that good but to someone else you could be the best. And some people think that you just done a great deed but never really notice or think that you are determined as good. These lines were very powerful.
